Myxas glutinosa

A small aquatic snail that measures around just 15mm in height. The gold and black mantle covers the majority of the snails delicate shell when extended.

 

Rarity: This species was once widespread throughout much of the United Kingdom; however it is currently only know to remain in a single location in Wales, Llyn Tegid.

 

Causes of decline: There have been multiple factors that have lead to the decline of this species, such as; water pollution, eutrophication, siltation, canalisation, and the drainage of ditches.

 

This species is listed as Critically Endangered within the British Isles.

The Species Recovery Trust have been assisting the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) with their ongoing Glutinous Snail conservation project, which aims to establish ex situ populations of the snail for translocation to areas within the historic rage of the species.

To do this SRT led a conservation planning exercise and facilitated a workshop with all stakeholders, during which a vision for the future of the snail and also its future conservation actions were defined - this plan is currently being drafted.
